San Jose/Silicon Valley needs no introduction as it is home to many successful and thriving software companies. Holding ISSRE in San Jose lets us access the entire software engineering talent in addition to engineers and researchers specifically working in software reliability. The program for ISSRE2010 aims at growing our strong mix of research and practice to a larger audience. The engagement with software companies from embedded to mainframes, clients to servers, enterprise to cloud and desktop applications to web-based services connect us with a new generation of engineers hungry for the advances in research and practice. Cisco has generously agreed to host the meeting at their conference center in San Jose. As we build the ISSRE2010 team, we welcome your input, ideas, contributions and willingness to volunteer.

The Program Committee Meeting was held on July 23-24 in Raleigh, NC where the selection of the research papers was finalized. Michel Cukier, Program Committee Chair, will be sending out notifications to the authors in the next few days. This year we had 130 papers submitted to the ISSRE research paper track. In the tradition of ISSRE, a very thorough review process was performed with over 650 reviews, on-line discussions, and a day and half of face to face discussions with about 15 Program Committe members in Raleigh and several other members attending remotely via Webex.
At ISSRE 2009, in Mysuru, we had a record turnout - around ~380 registrants, 80 Corporations and 20 countries. Here is a picture taken on Tuesday where we tried to usher most people to it. But there was a die-hard workshop group that were so engaged in their discussions that they did not want to take the break… we tried. Nevertheless we got a good number of our participants here.
IEEE Computer Society and IEEE Reliability Society
The 21st annual International Symposium on Software Reliability Engineering (ISSRE 2010) is focused on innovative techniques and tools for assessing, predicting, and improving the reliability, safety, and security of software products. ISSRE also emphasizes industrial relevance and rigorous empirical studies. ISSRE is sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society and the IEEE Reliability Society. It has grown to become the leading conference in the area and one of the few that attracts the technical leadership from both Academia and Industry. Last year (2009) we had an almost even split (50-50) between Academia and Industry - a rare achievement for any conference. ISSRE focuses on the theory and practice of software systems reliability engineering. Research papers are extensively reviewed by a large program committee and the selected papers are coveted. An Industrial committee separately reviews papers for the Industry track looking for relevance and applicability. ISSRE has some of the best Industry case studies reported. ISSRE Workshops have picked up considerable momentum. In 2009 we had over 100 participants in four workshops. Some of the workshop are becoming regulars - in that those communities meet year after year at ISSRE (Embedded Systems Reliability, and Software Rejuvenation). We hope to build these communities and seed new ones that are vital to current interests in Research and Industry. The following are a few of the areas that ISSRE covers in papers, fast abstracts, workshops, tutorials, and keynotes.
All ISSRE papers are submitted through this page. You will receive an email that acknowledges your submission and a passcode. You may use this passcode to update your submissions - therefore save it. If you forget it, there is a way to retreive it using your email address. Updates to the submission are not acknowledged by emails.

Papers from various tracks will be published in one of two proceedings:
The IEEE proceedings will contain accepted papers from the following
categories:
Industry track: Slide presentations (20 slides) or abstract (1 page) or full paper (10 pages)
Fast abstracts (2-pages) 2 column, IEEE format
Student papers: max 6 pages, 2 column, IEEE format.
Workshop papers: Workshop organizers have the option of publishing papers from their workshops in the supplemental proceedings. They need to contact the publications chair, Sudipto Ghosh (ghosh AT cs.colostate.edu), to work out the details.
IEEE requires that all papers submitted for the IEEE proceedings be in PDF format. A conformance check is performed by IEEE before a file can be accepted. Certain types of files are converted to PDF by IEEE PDFExpress. If authors are having problems with the conversion, they should contact the publications chair.
Papers submitted to the supplemental proceedings must be in PDF as well. Slide presentations can be in Powerpoint or PDF, though PDF is always preferred.
All accepted papers (research papers, fast abstracts, student pages, panel and workshop summaries, and industry practice papers) must follow the IEEE Computer Society Format Guidelines:

Papers that go into the IEEE proceedings must be submitted by September 3rd through the IEEE Conference proceedings site. The link to the IEEE submission site will be in the author kit mailed to you.
For the IEEE proceedings, authors will sign the copyright agreement online when they complete the final submission process with IEEE.
Papers to be printed in the supplemental proceedings need to follow the format provided here. You will find both the Word and Latex formats. The style is the 8.5’’ by 11’’, 2-column format.
Industry track presentations, fast abstracts, and student papers for the supplemental proceedings must be submitted through the START submission system by October 10, 2010. The details will be made available in the author notification emails.
For tracks other than industry, we will provide the authors an option to submit their slides before the conference.

ISSRE is a peer reviewed conference and receives submissions under different categories. The website lists these categories, describing what they are and what is expected from a potential author or presenter. Often looking through past conference proceedings or website helps gain a better idea of these tracks. Each of the categories may have a slightly different process of peer review and acceptance criteria. They also differ in terms of the time line. For instance, the submission and review time line for the Research Papers is well ahead of the Fast Abstracts - which by design occur later in the cycle. Each “track” has its details and time lines described under their respective pages. We will provide a link to the submissions site here, as also make it quite prominent on the home page as we approach the submission deadlines. Do note that all submissions will be electronic, in pdf format. The papers should be formatted to IEEE guidelines. We will also provide references for them on the site.
ISSRE has a rich tradition of workshops that are run with the conference. Some of these workshops have become “regular” in that they are conducted year after year and have built a small community around the special interest group. This year we have announced 5 workshops so far. In addition we also have HASE a regular symposium that is co-located with ISSRE.
Each workshop runs its own call for papers and program committee. The proceedings of the workshops are published in either the IEEE proceedings or the Supplemental proceedings. We encourage you to visit each of the workshop call for papers and participate in them.
Separately, as we work the budget process or ISSRE we are trying to accommodate all the workshops within the same low registration cost, or minimal additional cost. So, this bring an added benefit to you.

The primary goal of a tutorial is to deliver accelerated education in a specific topic. A tutorial is delivered by an expert in the field who not only knows the theory but can also provide cookbook methods, techniques, tools, examples, demos so the attendee can apply the newly acquired knowledge in his/her workplace. An attendee is generally not an expert in the topic but is curious to know if it is of relevance and if it is, how it can be applied to his/her work. For ISSRE 2010 we want to develop tutorials that are in keeping with the needs of the local software engineering community. To this end, the Industrial Committee will try to establish a set of interests by connecting with several industries and universities. As we develop a list of interested topics we will post them on this website, and solicit tutorial proposals. The time line for this is being worked on. One should expect that by May or June of this year, we should have a good idea from a needs perspective. In the meanwhile, do not hessitate to connect with the Industry chair with your ideas for Tutorials. We will formally open a submission process around May 2010. Some examples of tutorials:

Industry Practices Presentation Submission : August 1st, 2010 (Updated)
Industry Practices Submission Acceptance Notification : September 2010
The objective of the Industry Practice program is to establish a meaningful dialog among software practitioners and with software engineering researchers on the results (both good and bad), obstacles, and lessons learned associated with applying software development practices in various environments. The Industry Practice presentations will provide accounts of the application of software engineering practices (which may be principles, techniques, tools, methods, processes, testing techniques etc.) to a specific domain or to the development of a significant software system.
We seek submissions of presentations by authors in the software engineering community on industry relevant topics in technology, tools and practices related to software development, reliability, safety, security, availability, and dependability.
Submissions can either be a draft of the presentation or a detailed 1-2 page description of the presentation (submissions lacking details will not be accepted). Typically this will contain:
a problem definition and its importance
any potential solution tried to address the problem
analysis of the results of applying the solution to the problem
We list a few areas that are of current interest as suggestions for Case studies
Development: Software failure mode analysis, SW defect prediction, use of techniques such as (static analysis, code reviews, unit testing), defect classification and root cause analysis, remedies based on root cause, effectiveness of remedies, reliability of SW produced using various development methodologies like waterfall, agile, extreme etc.
Metrics: Defect density, different kinds of bugs per KLOC, reliability improvement achieved with different development and test techniques, measured availability, user perception studies
Testing: Test automation, log file analysis, test platforms, automatic test case generation, code coverage, prioritization and targeting of tests, estimating remaining defects and when to stop testing, HW and SW fault insertion testing, techniques for performance testing,
Safety and Security: Attack surface measurement, source code or binary static analysis for security, fuzzing tests, Safety considerations and proofs of safe operation.
Review Process The presentations will be reviewed by the Industry Program Committee and the selected authors will have a chance to present a talk (20 to 30 minutes) at the ISSRE 2010 conference. There is no need to write a paper and the authors only need to submit their presentation (PowerPoint or PDF format) for publication in the conference proceedings. The maximum number of slides in the presentation is 20 pages.
